We want you to trust SHINDO. That starts with being exact about its limits.
Keep your phone's government emergency alerts on. Earthquake Early Warnings, tsunami warnings and J-Alert messages are broadcast by mobile carriers to every phone in the area without any app. SHINDO adds to them; it does not replace them. In an emergency, follow the instructions of the Japan Meteorological Agency, your municipality and emergency services.
Every earthquake, tsunami, weather, river, volcanic and typhoon alert in SHINDO originates from the Japan Meteorological Agency (気象庁) or another public body named on Data sources & attribution. SHINDO does not detect earthquakes, does not forecast them, and does not issue its own earthquake-motion forecasts. The intensity and arrival time shown during an early warning are JMA's forecast for your area, passed on unchanged. "Real Danger Score" and similar labels in the app are a presentation of JMA's forecast intensity for your area, not an independent prediction.
Our server typically relays a JMA message within a few seconds. Delivery to your phone then depends on Apple's push service, your network, your device settings (notifications, Critical Alerts, Focus, Low Power Mode) and whether the app has been allowed to run. Any of these can delay or block an alert. Do not rely on SHINDO as your only source of warning.
JMA's Earthquake Early Warning is issued within seconds of the first seismic readings, before the earthquake is fully understood. It may over- or under-estimate intensity, cover areas that end up not shaking, or be cancelled. SHINDO relays cancellations to every device that was warned, but a cancellation can only arrive after the warning.
SHINDO rates alerts for the JMA forecast area that contains your approximate location (currently at prefecture or regional level). Conditions at your exact position, building or floor can differ. Settings such as building type or floor, where present, are informational and do not change what JMA forecasts.
The plain-language summaries in SHINDO are generated by an AI model from the official event data. They are written to be accurate and are labelled as AI-generated, but they can contain errors and are not an authoritative source. The official figures shown alongside them take precedence.
Felt-intensity reports and comments are submitted by users and are not verified. They are shown to give a sense of what people experienced, not as measurements.
Mesh messaging is best-effort. Whether a message arrives depends on other nodes being in range and powered. An SOS sent over the mesh is not received by emergency services; call 110 or 119 whenever you can.
